How to Find Received Handovers

Introduction

Received handovers are patient responsibility transfers sent to you by other clinicians. You can view, accept, or reject these handover requests from the Handovers page. This is essential for managing shift changes, colleague absences, and ensuring continuous patient care.

Before You Start

No special permissions required. All organisational users (Administrators, Team Owners, and Clinical Users) can view and manage handovers they receive.

Steps
Finding the Handovers Page

Option 1: Via Sidebar (Primary Method)

  1. Look at the left-hand sidebar
  2. Click Handovers (you'll see a pink badge showing the count of pending received handovers if any exist)
  3. The page opens with the Received tab selected by default

Option 2: Via Dashboard Card

  1. From your Dashboard, locate the My Received Handovers card
  2. The card displays the number of pending handovers
  3. Click the card to navigate directly to the Handovers page
  4. The Received tab opens automatically
Viewing Received Handovers

Once on the Handovers page:

  1. The Received tab shows all pending handover requests sent to you
  2. If no handovers exist, you'll see: "You currently have no pending handover requests"
  3. Each handover row displays:
    • A profile icon for the sending user
    • The patient name(s) being handed over (if multiple patients, you'll see the first patient name followed by "and X more" - hover to see all names)
    • The team name (if applicable) shown as "from [Team Name]"
    • The name of the user sending the handover (under "From user")
    • Accept and Reject buttons
Understanding the Handover Information

The table shows three key columns:

  • Patients: The patient(s) you're being asked to take responsibility for
  • From user: The colleague handing over responsibility to you
  • Action buttons: Accept or Reject options
Accepting a Handover
  1. Locate the handover you want to accept
  2. Click the green Accept button
  3. Click Accept again to confirm (this two-click pattern prevents accidental acceptance)
  4. The handover disappears from your list immediately
  5. You now have responsibility for the patient(s)
  6. The badge count on the sidebar decreases by 1

Note: You have 3 seconds to click the second time. If you don't, the button resets and you'll need to click twice again.

Rejecting a Handover
  1. Locate the handover you want to reject
  2. Click the red Reject button
  3. You'll see the message "Click again to reject"
  4. Click Reject again within 3 seconds to confirm
  5. The handover disappears from your list
  6. The sending user will be notified that you rejected the handover
  7. The badge count on the sidebar decreases by 1

Note: If you don't click the second time within 3 seconds, the button resets and you'll need to start over.

Viewing Sent Handovers

To see handovers you've sent to others:

  1. On the Handovers page, click the Sent tab
  2. Here you can view the status of handovers you've initiated
  3. You can cancel pending handovers using the Cancel button (also requires two clicks)
Tips
  • Badge indicators: The pink badge on the sidebar Handovers link shows your total number of pending received handovers at a glance
  • Two-click safety: Both Accept and Reject require two clicks within 3 seconds. This prevents accidental actions during busy shifts
  • Multiple patients: When a handover includes multiple patients, click the "and X more" link to see all patient names in a tooltip
  • Loading states: If buttons appear disabled, an action is already processing. Wait for it to complete
  • Empty state: If you see "You currently have no pending handover requests", your Received tab is clear
  • Check regularly: Handovers often arrive during shift changes, so check this page at the start and end of your shift
