How to Cancel a Handover

Introduction

If you've sent a handover request to a colleague but need to withdraw it before they respond, you can cancel it from the Handovers view. This is useful when circumstances change, such as when you decide to hand over to a different person or retain responsibility yourself.

Before You Start
  • You can only cancel handovers that you have sent
  • You cannot cancel handovers sent by other users
  • Once a handover has been accepted or rejected, it cannot be cancelled
  • No special permissions are required to cancel your own handover requests
Steps
  1. From the sidebar, click Handovers

  2. Click the Sent tab to view handovers you've sent to other users

  3. Find the handover you want to cancel in the table. The table shows:

    • The patient's name
    • The recipient (listed under "To user")
    • The current status
  4. Click the red Cancel button (marked with an X icon) next to the handover you want to withdraw

  5. The button text changes to Click to confirm. You have 3 seconds to confirm the cancellation

  6. Click the button again to confirm the cancellation

  7. The handover is immediately cancelled and disappears from your Sent tab. The cancelled handover request also disappears from the recipient's Received tab

Tips
  • Two-click safety: The confirmation button requires two clicks within 3 seconds to prevent accidental cancellations. If you don't click the second time within 3 seconds, the button resets and you'll need to start again

  • No undo: Once you've confirmed the cancellation, the action cannot be reversed. If you need to hand over the patient again, you'll need to create a new handover request

  • Silent confirmation: There's no pop-up message when a cancellation succeeds. The handover simply disappears from the list, which confirms the cancellation was successful

  • Timing matters: Cancel handovers promptly if your plans change, so the recipient doesn't spend time reviewing a request you no longer need them to action
