How to Use the Handovers View

Introduction

The Handovers view allows you to manage patient handover requests. Use it to accept or reject handovers you've received from colleagues, or to cancel handover requests you've sent to others. This central hub ensures you stay on top of all pending patient responsibility transfers.

Before You Start

No special permissions required. All organisational users (Administrators, Team Owners, and Clinical Users) can access the Handovers view.

Steps
Accessing the Handovers View
  1. From the sidebar, click Handovers
  2. The Handover requests page opens, displaying the Received tab by default
  3. Notice the badge on the sidebar link showing the count of received handovers (if any)
Viewing Received Handover Requests
  1. The Received tab displays a table of incoming handover requests
  2. Each row shows:
    • Profile avatar of the sending user
    • Patient name(s) — if multiple patients, you'll see "FirstPatient and N more"
    • Name of the user who sent the request (under From user)
    • Accept and Reject buttons
  3. Click anywhere on a row (except the buttons) to expand and view all patient names if multiple patients are included
  4. The tab badge shows the total count of received handovers
Accepting a Handover
  1. Locate the handover request you want to accept in the Received tab
  2. Click the green Accept button on the right side of the row
  3. The button displays a loading state whilst processing
  4. The handover disappears from your list once accepted
  5. You now have responsibility for the patient(s), and all outstanding actions are transferred to you
Rejecting a Handover
  1. Locate the handover request you want to reject in the Received tab
  2. Click the red Reject button once
  3. The button displays the message: "Click again to reject"
  4. Click the Reject button again within 3 seconds to confirm
  5. The handover disappears from your list once rejected
  6. The original user retains responsibility for the patient(s)

Note: If you don't click again within 3 seconds, the button reverts to its normal state and you'll need to start over.

Viewing Sent Handover Requests
  1. Click the Sent tab header
  2. The table displays your outgoing handover requests
  3. Each row shows:
    • Profile avatar
    • Patient name(s)
    • Name of the target user (under To user)
    • Cancel button
  4. The tab badge shows the total count of sent handovers
Cancelling a Sent Handover
  1. In the Sent tab, locate the handover request you want to cancel
  2. Click the red Cancel button
  3. The button displays a loading state whilst processing
  4. The handover disappears from your list once cancelled
  5. The target user no longer sees the handover in their Received tab
  6. You retain responsibility for the patient(s)
Tips
  • The sidebar badge shows your received handover count, making it easy to spot new requests at a glance
  • Tab badges update automatically as you accept, reject, or cancel handovers
  • If a handover involves multiple patients, expand the row to review all patient names before accepting
  • The Reject button requires two clicks to prevent accidental rejections
  • Tab state is saved in the URL — you can bookmark /handovers?tabindex=1 to go directly to Sent handovers
  • When you accept a handover, all outstanding actions for those patients are automatically reassigned to you
Common Scenarios

Empty state messages:

  • If you have no pending received handovers, you'll see: "You currently have no pending handover requests"
  • If you have no pending sent handovers, you'll see: "You currently have no pending sent handover requests"

Error handling:

  • If an error occurs (e.g., network failure, handover already processed), a message appears and the handover remains in the list
  • You can retry the action if needed
