Accessibility Statement — the CAREFUL Platform
Accessibility Statement — the CAREFUL Platform
Careful Systems Limited wants as many people as possible to be able to use the CAREFUL platform. This statement sets out the accessibility position of the platform as it stands, including what has not yet been tested. It states the current position rather than a target, and it will be replaced when the formal audit described below is complete.
Scope of this statement
This statement applies to the CAREFUL platform: the native iOS application, the native Android application and the responsive web application, which are built from a single codebase. It does not apply to the careful.online marketing website, which carries its own separate statement.
CAREFUL is used by clinical and operational staff. Patients do not use the platform directly.
Compliance status
The CAREFUL platform has not been formally audited against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 level AA, and conformance is therefore not claimed. The platform is working towards WCAG 2.2 AA. Until the audit described under "What we are doing to improve accessibility" is complete and its findings are remediated, the platform must be treated as of unknown conformance rather than as conformant or non-conformant.
Accessibility provisions in the platform today
The platform is built on the accessibility frameworks of the operating systems it runs on, and accessible design patterns are applied in the web application. In practice this means the following provisions are available to users.
Provision
Mechanism
Screen reader support
The iOS application works with VoiceOver and the Android application with TalkBack, through the standard platform accessibility APIs
Text resizing
The mobile applications honour the operating system dynamic type setting; the web application reflows on browser zoom
Colour and contrast
Interface colours follow the CAREFUL design system, which was designed for legibility in clinical environments
Keyboard operation
The web application is operable using a keyboard
Known limitations
The known limitations of the platform cannot be listed with confidence because no formal audit has been carried out. Stating a short list of defects would imply that the remainder of the platform has been tested, which is not the case.
What we are doing to improve accessibility
A formal external accessibility audit of the CAREFUL platform against WCAG 2.2 level AA will be commissioned, and its findings remediated, by the end of Q2 2027. On completion of that programme this statement will be reissued with the audit date, the conformance position it establishes, and any remaining non-conformances with their correction dates.
Accessibility defects reported by users in the meantime are handled through the ordinary defect process and prioritised against clinical risk.
The Accessible Information Standard
The Accessible Information Standard has been read and its requirements were considered in the design of the platform. The Standard governs how health and care organisations identify and meet the communication needs of patients and service users. CAREFUL is used by staff and carries no patient-facing communication, so the duties under the Standard fall to each deploying organisation rather than to Careful Systems Limited. The design principles the Standard rests on — legibility, text scaling and screen-reader compatibility — informed the platform design, and we support deploying organisations in meeting their own duties.
Responsibilities of deploying organisations
Each deploying organisation is responsible for the accessibility of its own digital services, including any obligations it carries under the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. Where an organisation needs evidence about the platform to complete its own accessibility statement, we provide it on request.
Feedback and reporting accessibility problems
Report any accessibility problem with the CAREFUL platform, or request information in a different format, using the ordinary support channels:
- Email support@careful.online.
- Telephone +44 800 955 2273.
- Raise a ticket through the support portal.
Enforcement procedure
The Equality and Human Rights Commission enforces the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. Anyone dissatisfied with our response to an accessibility complaint may contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service.
Preparation of this statement
This statement was prepared on 25 August 2026. It has not been reviewed by an external accessibility specialist, and the platform has not been tested against WCAG 2.2. The statement will be reviewed on approval, then annually, and on any material change to the platform or on completion of the external audit.
